Girls Excelling in Math and Science of Prince George’s County

GEMS, a mentoring program for girls in Prince George’s County middle schools, is designed to:

    • Enhance mathematical and scientific abilities
    • Increase interest in pursuing studies and careers in science, engineering and mathematics
    • Instill an appreciation for the social values of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
    • Encourage parental support and student achievement

In cooperation with the middle schools and with the support of the University of Maryland community outreach programs, we offer

    • After-school enrichment classes in math and science with an emphasis on hands-on activities and scientific inquiry

    • Outstanding University of Maryland (UMD) undergraduates as GEMS role models and mentors

    • Field trips to math and science educational and research centers, for example, the Marian Koshland Science Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the University of Maryland research centers

    • Family meetings that provide opportunities for parents to connect with and engage in their children’s educational process

GEMS enjoys the support of:
